Talmud Yerushalmi: the next frontier

The monumental fifteen-year, 73-volume Schottenstein English Edition of the Talmud Bavli was completed in March 2005, but that was only the stimulus for a new beginning. Work was already underway on an unprecedented new project: the Schottenstein Edition of Talmud Yerushalmi, in Hebrew and English. For over 1600 years, the Yerushalmi has been a sealed treasure to all but the most outstanding Torah scholars. The editors of ArtScroll felt that they should undertake the same sort of commentary to Yerushalmi that they had done to the Bavli.

But before undertaking this 12-year, 47-volume project, it was necessary to consult Da’as Torah. Rabbis Meir Zlotowitz and Nosson Scherman sought the guidance of Hagaon Harav Yosef Shalom Eliashiv and Hagaon Harav Chaim Kanievsky in Israel, and the leading roshei hayeshivah in America. They gave their approval and warm encouragement, so the work was begun. So far ArtScroll has released Mesechtos Berachos (1 & 2), Peah, Ma’asros, and Shevi’is in English. Accolades have not stopped pouring in. To browse the Jerusalem Talmud category at ArtScroll.com, please click the image of the book or click here.
