Breakthrough New Halachic Series for Daily Living -

Rabbi Simcha Bunim Cohen’s popular books on the laws of Shabbos and Yom Tov have clarified complex questions of halachah for tens of thousands of Jewish homes worldwide. Last week, ArtScroll published the first volume in Rabbi Cohen’s much-anticipated new series on the Laws of Daily Living. Heralded as a “Kitzur Shulchan Aruch for our time”, this comprehensive volume provides a clearly delineated halachic guide which examines: Morning Routines, Preparations for Prayers, Tallis, Tefillin, the Berachos, Amen, and Pesukei Dezimrah. Dedicated by the Taub family of Lawrence NY, this significant new text is already generating strong and positive feedback from scholars and lay readers.

Just in Time for the Year of Shemittah

Next year in Israel is a Shemittah year, wherein according to biblical law, the land is to lie fallow every seventh year. There are many important aspects of halachah (Jewish law) which apply to this practice. Because of its timely relevance, ArtScroll's editors of the Jerusalem Talmud gave priority to completing Yerushalmi Mesechta Shevi’is, which is the primary source for the laws of Shemittah. since there is no gemara on Shevi’is in the Talmud Bavli. So far Mesechta Shevi’is complete in two volumes in English. Volume 1 in Hebrew has been published and volume 2 will be released in August. Already numerous groups have undertaken study of the mesechta, here and in Israel. Rabbis and laymen now have access to a clear and authoritative resource for studying the Talmudic basis for Hilchos Shevi’is, which was previously available only to accomplished talmidei chachamim. ArtScroll has also published the Ryzman Hebrew Edition of Mishna Shevi'is, which is available in full and pocket size.

Talmud Yerushalmi: the next frontier

The monumental fifteen-year, 73-volume Schottenstein English Edition of the Talmud Bavli was completed in March 2005, but that was only the stimulus for a new beginning. Work was already underway on an unprecedented new project: the Schottenstein Edition of Talmud Yerushalmi, in Hebrew and English. For over 1600 years, the Yerushalmi has been a sealed treasure to all but the most outstanding Torah scholars. The editors of ArtScroll felt that they should undertake the same sort of commentary to Yerushalmi that they had done to the Bavli.

But before undertaking this 12-year, 47-volume project, it was necessary to consult Da’as Torah. Rabbis Meir Zlotowitz and Nosson Scherman sought the guidance of Hagaon Harav Yosef Shalom Eliashiv and Hagaon Harav Chaim Kanievsky in Israel, and the leading roshei hayeshivah in America. They gave their approval and warm encouragement, so the work was begun. So far ArtScroll has released Mesechtos Berachos (1 & 2), Peah, Ma’asros, and Shevi’is in English. Accolades have not stopped pouring in. To browse the Jerusalem Talmud category at ArtScroll.com, please click the image of the book or click here.
